Why paying attention to leg pain is important:
-
Leg pain could indicate a condition called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
-
70% of Americans suffering from PAD are asymptomatic.
-
PAD can lead to severe leg pain, non-healing wounds and amputation.
-
Amputations are associated with high mortality.
"50% of patients in the U.S. that undergo an above- or below-the-knee amputation never receive a formal vascular evaluation."
- Dr. John
Are you suffering from leg pain?
It could be Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious condition that affects circulation, leading to pain, numbness, and slow-healing wounds. Left untreated, it can lead to severe complications, including limb loss.

Not all leg pain is the same. PAD-related pain is often:
-
Cramping or aching in the calves, thighs, or buttocks while walking or climbing stairs
-
Pain that disappears at rest but returns with activity (claudication)
-
Burning, tingling, or numbness in the legs or feet
-
Coldness in one leg compared to the other
-
Pain at night, even while resting
-
Sores on legs or feet that heal slowly or not at all

At Davis Vein & Vascular Center, led by board-certified vascular specialist Dr. John Davis, we provide minimally invasive, cutting-edge treatments to restore blood flow, relieve pain, and prevent serious complications.

What is PAD?
PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) is a serious vascular condition that restricts blood flow to your legs due to plaque buildup in the arteries. Left untreated, it can lead to pain, wounds that won’t heal, and even amputation.
Causes and Risk Factors
-
Primary Cause: Plaque buildup (atherosclerosis)
-
Other Causes: Blood vessel inflammation, injury, muscle or ligament changes, radiation exposure
-
Risk Factors: Tobacco use, age 50+, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, abdominal obesity, family history, increased homocysteine levels
The Danger of Plaque Buildup (Atherosclerosis)
PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits, cholesterol, and calcium accumulate in the arteries, hardening and narrowing them. This limits oxygen-rich blood from reaching your legs, leading to pain, tissue damage, and an increased risk of infection or limb loss. PAD is also a risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
